Pirate Party Ideas

16/02/2011

Pirate Party Invitations

Pirate party invitations can be easily made and really effective.  You can make a be a treasure map (see below), a treasure chest, or a Jolly Roger flag with a scull and crossbones. These can be rolled up and tied with a ribbon. Using some of  the phrases below in a fancy font or calligraphy will make it really authentic!  Include the start time, end time, date and location of your pirate adventure.

How to make a Treasure Map

An authentic looking pirate treasure map is easy to make. Your kids will enjoy helping you make it and will have loads of fun hunting for buried treasure. Here’s how to make one.

Materials (paper, pen, used tea bag, paper towel, lighter)

  1. Use a piece of white paper and draw your map.  Include the compass points and any verse or written clues needed by the hunters to find the treasure.  Different colored inks work fine, some pencil crayons will work too.
  2. Tear the edges off the page, to make it look like a treasure map.
  3. When your map is finished, wipe the wet tea bag over both sides of the page.  The page will turn a light brown color.  The page should be soaked through by the time you are finished.
  4. Crumple it into a ball and let dry over night.
  5. If you are feeling brave, lightly burn the edges with a lighter.

By this point, your treasure map should look hundreds of years old!  Use your map for a treasure hunt or party invitation for a  birthday party.

Party Game Ideas

Simon Says: Change the popular game of Simon Says to Captain Says. An adult, or one of the children, is the leader. The leader tells everyone what to do; Captain says run on the spot, Captain says hands on heads, Captain says swap places with the person next to you, etc. Occasionally the leader misses out ‘Captain says’ – anyone who does the action is out.

Pirate Party

Treasure Hunt: Simply hide pieces of eight (chocolate coins) around the room hall or garden, or create a treasure map with clues. Don’t make it too difficult or some children will get bored and drop out.

Treasure Islands: An adaptation of musical chairs – place mats or sheets of card on the floor and callthem Treasure Islands. Swim in between and splash for an island when the music stops. Last one to reach an island is out. For added excitement you can pretend that you are a shark!

Freezin Pirates: This is musical statues in pirate gear and it works better if you use pirate music. If you want to burn off a bit of energy don’t be too quick turning the music off.

Pass the Parcel: can easily be adapted to “Pass the Booty. Don’t forget to add smaller prizes (chocolate coins) in between the layers and have a pirate themed prize as the final prize.

Myth busting Party Bags

31/03/2010

Throwing the perfect children’s party takes a lot of planning. There are many details that you will need to take care of. One important task is putting together party bags for the guests to take home.

However, I read lots of forums from parents who hate party bags mainly because of the plastic junk that comes with them.  Bags are usually filled with mass produced products from the supermarkets which mean cheap plastic toys that get thrown away within minutes either because the child has lost interest or the item has broken.  But it does not have to be like this!  Party bags have come a long way in the last few years and no longer do children (and parents alike) have to suffer party bag plastic tat anymore!

Here we expel the myths of party bags to help you plan for a better party bag.

Party bags are full of plastic rubbish

Most parents would take a trip to the local supermarket to buy party bag fillers.  The problem with this is that supermarkets sell mass-produced items, which means they are cheaply made and plastic.

But buying your party bags online will give you so much more scope to buy the unique party bag.  You are able to buy the exact quantity you need, buy a quality gift and choose something that’s not available on the high street. The cost of postage is no more than the costs of getting to the shops plus parking – besides you get to peruse online at your leisure avoiding the bustle of the shops.

Party bags contain several gifts

It’s not necessary to fill the bag to the brim.  Children will appreciate a well selected quality gift that they can make use of and that will last longer than the time it takes to get home and eat the cake.

Party bags are expensive

If you have decided on giving out party bags, you set yourself a budget. In my experience, most parents spend between £1 and £2 per bag depending on the number of children coming to the party. For £1 you can still get good quality items without resorting to the supermarkets! For example  £1 you can buy a white paper party bag (get the children involved and let them decorate their own!), a wooden bookmark and some stickers .

Party bags have to be bags

We are all too familiar with the character plastic loot bags. But there is no rule that says party bags have to be bags. The gift you decide to give can simply be wrapped in tissue paper or cellophane. Or as an alternative you can hand out party cones filled with the party bag filler or confectionary of your choice.

At the end of the day, love them or hate them, there is no denying that party bags  are part of any successful party and who doesn’t want to send their party guests home with a smile on their face?
